Viewer Question: Physics and Prerequisite for A&P?

I received this question the other day asking about what prerequisites a student should take before enrolling in Human Anatomy and Physiology.

Dear Mr. Ford,

I am a first-year Life Science student. By the end of next year, we must declare our majors/minors. I have already noticed some interest in the field of Physiology and, upon watching your wonderfully informative videos on YouTube, I must say that I am now convinced.

I know that you answered a question about how much Chemistry is in the subject. My question is quite similar in nature but it is one that has been bothering me for quite a while. Although physics is not a particular prerequisite for entrance in the Physiology major program, it is signaled as a highly recommended choice. The problem is that I was only able to take a physics course in high school and cannot really find an opportunity to do so any longer (all the physics courses here require that you have taken physics all throughout high school).

When I spoke to the Head Officer of the Physiology department at my university, he said that it is practically impossible to study Physiology without a strong physics background without memorizing everything. Although I very much value his opinion, I feel that it may have been slightly exaggerated. I know that I will work very hard to get what I want, but I wouldn’t want to make my life needlessly difficult.

What is your take on the issue?

I very much value your opinion and hope to see more of your wonderful videos on YouTube!

With regards,

Georgia

Viewer Questions (pt. 2): A&P videos in my class, and should I take Microbiology and A&P together?

Question 1:

Hi, Could I use any of your materials for my classes?

Sincerely, Terri

Yes!  Any videos that are on YouTube, VideoJug, TeacherTube, HowCasts and iTunes are for public use. If you or any instructor would like to use the full course (videos, PowerPoints, class handouts) found on www.mrfordsclass.net please contact me directly at mrford@mrfordsclass.com. Instructors can also arrange for class-wide membership discounts for all of their students!

Question 2:

Mr. Ford,

I bought your Anatomy & Physiology, lecture and find them informative. I am returning to school after 16 years away from school. Next semester I am taking microbiology and A&P. This is really worrying me. Do you think that is too much to do in one semester? Are there lectures for microbiology students? Any advice you can give is appreciated.

Sincerely, Khoa

Khoa taking two science class of this nature at the same time can be very demanding.  What concerns me the most is the fact it has been 16 years since you have been in the academic world.  While I am not saying taking both classes and doing well in them is impossible, I am saying that I would not advise it.  Once you are in the swing of being a student again than I would say sure, gives it a shot.

Other factors to consider:

  • Are you returning to school as a full time student or part time
  • Will you be working while going through school
  • Doyou have children?

I have been all of the three.  I can say that returning to school, having a full time job, and children make being a student more of a challenge that being in your later teens or early twenties taking classes. While I find the non-traditional student can do very well (we appear to be more mature and take being in school more serious), we must understand our needs. I would suggest taking one class, see how it goes. Pay attention to how much time you need to study, how much time you get to study, what support you receive. You first semester should be very self reflective on what it was like being a student again. If all appears to be going well, then add classes the following semester.
